Another photo that was inspired by fellow daily photo city bloggers. Felicia & Alexandra's San Diego Daily Photo's post of their Winter Beach made me want to show everyone what a North Bay bench near the water looks in early December.

This photo was taken in along the boardwalk that passes by the marina heading towards Kings Landing.

Christmas Tree - Education Centre Library

Last week I had seen various unusual & wonderful Christmas Trees that Miami Daily Photo had posted on her blog. They were part of South Florida's Festival of the Trees. Thanks to Gwen, I thought I would share one of the different Xmas trees that can be found in North Bay.

This tree of Tim Horton coffee cups can be found in the front entrance of the Education Centre Library on the Nipissing University - Canadore College campus.

This is the view of the pond at the back of the Education Centre (part of Nipissing University & Canadore College). This is what you can see from the cafeteria windows. It was a bit cold & windy when I took this photo on Monday afternoon.

Come February 2008, this area will be swarming with hockey players as Canadore College hosts the Canadian Pond Hockey Faceoff on February 15, 16, & 17.

Snow Commute - Overpass

Some of you have asked if we get a lot of snow. That depends on your definition of a lot. I don't think we get enough snow but others think we get too much.

This photo was taken last Friday (Nov 30) of the cars coming from downtown onto Lakeshore Drive via the Overpass (called that since it goes above the train tracks of both the Ontario Northland and Ottawa Valley Railways). The snowstorm is just starting to roll into town.

To give you an idea as to the amount of snow that has fallen (& drifted), since Sunday afternoon, I have shovelled out the driveway 5 times! It's supposed to let up a bit by tomorrow, which means that I'll actually have a chance to do a proper job of cleaning the driveway and piling the snow away from the house.

Here it's important to push the snow as far away from the driveway and house on these first snow falls since it will continue to snow until March. It is no picnic trying to clean your driveway when you have created 6 foot banks of snow on either side.

Sorry for the lack of posts over the last couple of days, but I wasn't in town and had not uploaded any photos previously. As for the current weather, well it's around -9C and we have a bit of snow on the ground (I'll post some photos of the snow after I finish the airplane ride).

I'm still on my airplane ride. To answer some of your questions, the photos were all taken on a 1/2hr ride around the City of North Bay in mid-September.

Here we see part of Pinewood Park Drive (the old Hwy 11) as we are looking west towards Lake Nipissing.

This is St. Theresa's School in Callander which has approximately 165 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The school is part of the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board.

Snow starting to fall while coming over the ONR overpass. (Trail on the left side of photo is part of the Kinsmen Bike Path) --- don't worry I wasn't driving & taking pictures at the same time (I had the pleasure of being a passenger and could enjoy the snow falling).

Wonderful winter is trying to arrive....sadly a lot of the snow that fell did not it make thru to the next day. Oh well, Environment Canada says we might be in store for some more snow flurries over the weekend!!! Yippee!

This photo was taken a few weeks ago when I went for a little plane ride around North Bay. The Jack Garland Airport was named in memory of Jack Garland, a longtime Member of Parliament for North Bay's Nipissing electoral district.

Those of you who may be worried that you can't land your personal Airbus needed worry as there is a 10,000 foot runway for your use.

November Theme Day - Colour Blue

This month's theme is the colour blue. I chose to take this photo of the original Chief Commanda boat that formerly plied the waters of Lake Nipissing serving as both a pleasure craft, tourist boat as well as a supply ships for some of the communities on the French River. The boat is now permanently moored at the North Bay Marina where during the summer it is used as a restaurant. The colour blue can be seen throughout the boat, from it's smoke stack, window coverings as well as the awnings on the entrances.

After walking along the 2.7km long Cranberry Trail, this is part of the view you are greeted with. The sounds of the waves crashing and the trees whispering as the wind whips through is very haunting as you walk along the trail and is just amazing once you step out onto the shore.

And yes, that is a small cabin on that island in the background.

Last weekend the town of Callander which is just south of North Bay officially unveiled the latest trail to be added to Discovery Routes. It's a wonderful 2.7 km trail that is just west of where the Kate Pace Way trail ends. This trail takes you out to the shores of Lake Nipissing and past a cranberry bog! Cranberries are a great tasting fruit! Along the trail there are numerous interpretative signs telling visitors about the animals in the area, the trees & floral species native to the area as well as some local history. It's a walking/biking trail (but no roller blades as it is a mixture of sand & crushed rock trail).

Bob & Doug MacKenzie Beer (Take Off Eh!!)

Wobbly Pop!! In honour of Dave Thomas' (1/2 of the duo Bob & Doug McKenzie) appearance this Friday at North Bay's Capitol Centre with his brother (Ian Thomas), I present a very Canadian thing: the Stubbie beer bottle!!

The Brick Brewing Company from Kitchner, Ontario has revived an old favourite, Red Cap Ale.

Red Cap Ale was Canada's most popular beer in the 50s and 60s, owning almost half the market at one point. Brick Brewing Company Ltd re-introduced the brand in the popular stubby bottle in 2002. (Stubbies are a Canadian thing!!)

In honour of Bob & Doug McKenzie's 24 (pronounced two-four) anniversary of their big screen debut in Strange Brew, Jim Brickman and the Brick Brewing Company released limited edition Stubby bottles of Red Cap Ale.

3. I am a Toronto Maple Leafs fan - which I think makes me an eternal optimists - fans of the NHL will know what I mean while fellow Leaf fans having been sharing my pain since 1967.

I have eclectic musical tastes (click on some of the songs on the left - the Deezer service allows visitors to listen to songs you have chosen - thanks to PaB for having this on his site which piqued my interest). I have tried to have Canadian music displayed (except for the One Tin Soldier by Coven - this song was originally done by the Canadian group Original Caste but no recording was available on the site). The Stompin' Tom Connors song is an unofficial hockey anthem - it gets played a lot at rinks in Canada!

5. I love chocolate & cheese but not together!

7. I am not a fan of reality TV except for sporting events - though sometimes the announcers are a bit of a pain to listen to.

8. I love snowstorms and cold winter days when the mercury dips below -40°C.

Sorry about the lack of updates for the past couple of days but it has been a bit hectic, with Thanksgiving and the Ontario Election this week.

Here's a photo of the three main candidates that were running in the riding of Nipissing in the provincial election. The photo was taken by the ONR overpass & Lee Park.

October Theme Day - Cemetery

Today, October 1, is theme day which is to be a cemetery photo.

This gravestone (in the Terrace Lawn Cemetery on O’Brian Street) serves as a reminder that Lake Nipissing could be dangerous to cross as evidenced by the drowning of the entire Mansbridge family.

Hockeyville (8) - Coach's Corner in North Bay

All Canadian hockey fans will recognize the dapper gentleman walking to centre ice as being Don Cherry, also know as Grapes. He is a former Boston Bruins coach and has a wonderfully colourful programme called "Coach's Corner" which is aired during the first intermission of all Saturday night hockey games televised on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) flagship show "Hockey Night in Canada".

His partner on the show for the past 18 years has been Ron MacLean. Ron although a dapper dresser himself, cannot match the stylish and sometimes flamboyant suits and ties that Don wears. (If you can't tell, Don is wearing the teal suit with yellow tie).

Don Cherry usually very outspoken all issues not just hockey. Not everyone in Canada agrees with Don but almost no hockey fan will miss watching his programme.

This evening during Hockeyville, they put on a great live "Coach's Corner". Don had some colourful things to say while as usual, Ron was more diplomatic in his comments. Don was even told by a NHL suit that they needed to end their programme so that the Zambonis could come out to flood the rink but Don said "we'll stop when we want to" and the fans just "screamed" their approval for Don & Ron to continue their talking.

Thank yous goes out to the CBC, Ron MacLean and Don Cherry for being a part of North Bay's Hockeyville.

The NHL (National Hockey League), the NHLPA (National Hockey League Players Association), CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) and Kraft through Hockeyville brought an exciting game of hockey to North Bay last evening.

The two teams who generously availed themselves to the community were the New York Islanders and the Atlanta Thrashers.

I will post over the next few days some photos from the arena (Memorial Gardens).

The fans were thrilled with the action on the ice. Plus it didn’t hurt that close to 70-80% of all seats were reserved for children. The kids and their parents & grandparents had a fantastic time. Tons and tons of noise from an hour prior to the game to well afterwards.

Oh and for those of you who don’t know. Hockey is one of two national sports for Canada, the other being lacrosse. Nothing beats going to a live game. But if you can’t watch a live game, you will want to watch a game that is being broadcasted by the CBC. Your best coverage is Hockey Night in Canada – the Saturday night doubleheaders are great. (I’ll have more on that later – with some photos of Grapes – people from Boston will know who I’m referring to).

Kraft Hockeyville arrives in North Bay today. Actually it's been here for a few days. The Stanley Cup was on display yesterday in Thomson Park as well as a function up at the college. NHL alumni Peter Mahovlich, Bryan Trottier, Gary Leeman, Ken Morrow, Jeff Odgers and Troy Crowder were also on hand to sign autographs.

The New York Islanders (coached by Ted Nolan) will face off against the Atlanta Thrashers (coached by Bob Hartley) at Memorial Gardens. Should be lots of fun. Don Cherry and Ron Maclean will be there as well. CBC is supposed to be doing a webcast of the event.

Chief Commanda Cruise Sign

Well yesterday we saw the sign for the The Boat restaurant, here's the sign for Georgian Bay Cruise Company's Chief Commanda II boat that now actually plies the water of Lake Nipissing since 1974.

Tomorrow's photo will show why the municipal dock is called King's Landing. Then a couple of days later, the photos of the actual Chief Commanda I & Chief Commanda II.

Oh and if you wondering about the bike path, the Kate Pace Way is on the east side (city side) of the road that hugs the beach. On this section of the path only wheels allowed (ie. bikes, rollerbladers etc.) since the west side (beach side) is reserved for walkers (pedesterians) only!

This is another photo taken near the marina. The Boat is a restaurant that is inside the old Chief Commanda. This boat plied the waters of Lake Nipissing from 1947 to 1974. The Chief Commanda was operated by the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission as a service, ferrying freight and people to the Dokis Indian Reserve along the French River (west end of Lake Nipissing).

Nipissing U & Canadore College Students for Shinerama

I'm on holidays & in an area that has no telephone service (including cell phones) or internt service so I won't be responding to any comments until later this week when I get back. But I have arranged for posts to be uploaded.

Yesterday was Theme Day and it was about street signs and such so I figured why not post a couple more today. If you are driving from the south and change your mind about visiting North Bay, you can turn east and head to Ottawa along Highway 17 (a Trans Canada Highway).

I actually have posted this for JoAnn from the Netherlands whose dog IOS has been having a tough time as of late.

And the below photo shows how far it is from North Bay to Ottawa. The distance listed is in kilometres.

September Theme Day - Street Lights & Signs

I thought this would be a different type of post for the September's Theme Day of Street Lights & Street Signs. Although the street lights are quite normal, it's the sign called "Runaway Truck Ramp" that is a little unusual and figured there would not be too many of these in other city blogs. The Runaway Truck Ramp was installed about 20 years ago. It is supposed to be used in case of equipment failure (brakes & such) and that instead of a transport truck barreling right thru the centre of town it will be stopped in a safe manner.

If you click on the photo you can see the details a bit clearer as well as see different parts of North Bay. The blue water tower in the background is in the West Ferris area of North Bay where I had taken the pictures of deers and of the horse riders. As well you can see the top of St Vincent church as well. (it's a little to the right and above the North Bay sign)

Heritage Carousel (Horses)

Here's a shot of one of the North Bay Heritage carousels located on the Lake Nipissing waterfront. When you click on the photo you can see a bird at the top of the building, it's real and just happened to want to pose in my photo!!

Here's a bit of the history of the carousel from the Heritage website:

"Todd Goings of Marion, Ohio, was contacted to rebuild a 1908 Herschell-Spillman mechanism. Chuck Kaparich of Missoula, Montana carved 28 horses and the North Bay Wood Carvers carved 9. Each of these horses were put up for adoption and were adopted in about three months. Other parts of the carousel where then put up for adoption, thus raising funds to pay for the horses, and to paint and furbish the Carousel.
Local artists were approached to paint 33 horses and 28 original paintings of local scenes. A rocking chariot, stationary chariot, spinning tub and band organ were carved using local designs that reflect the wildlife of Northern Ontario. The carousel was assembled by its dedicated volunteers."

Ticket Office for Heritage Railway

This old train caboose has been put to good use. It is now the ticket office for the Heritage Railway and Carousel. Some grandparents can be seen sitting and enjoying the day amongst the flowers. If you click on the photo, you will get more detail and will even be able to see the prices for the rides ($5 for 6 ride ticket or $1 per single ride ticket). Anytime we have company from out of town we always bring them down to the Lake Nipissing waterfront so they can see the train and carousels.

North Bay Heritage Railway Car Shop

This is the car & locomotive shop for the Heritage Railway. Please click on the photo for a larger image.

The Heritage Railway is a miniature railway that operates during the summer and on weekends in late spring and early fall. Over 100,000 passengers per summer will ride on the little trains enjoying the Lake Nipissing waterfront. It is run by volunteers and attempts to preserve some of North Bay's railroading history.

Located just a stone throw away from the Saturday's photo of the beach volleyball pitch is the Associated Canadian Travellers (ACT North Bay Club) playground at Memorial Beach on the shores of Lake Nipissing. Tomorrow I'll post a photo of the some of the equipment on the playground. Lots of sand and padding in case any of the little ones slip while pretending to be pirates or adventures!

Train Derailment (west of Verner)

The Ottawa Valley Railway had a train derailment a few miles west of Verner on Sunday August 19, 2007. Nobody was injured. As well there were no hazardous or noxious chemicals aboard the cars that did derail. (As you can see it appears to be goods destined for department stores - The Bay, Zellers and Canadian Tire).

Sphinx drupiferarum (wild cherry sphinx) - Monster for Short

This interesting monster will eventually turn into a large moth. Here's a link that shows what this little monster will turn into - Wild Cherry Sphinx.

The reason I said monster, was this cute and what appeared to be slow moving caterpillar actually lunged and tried to strike my hand with its sharp horn. YES, I said HORN (more like a large SPIKE though). I was trying to place my hand near the sphinx in order to give a reference for its size but alas I learned my lesson and will just have to describe its length instead (between 5- 6 inches).

The wild cherry sphinx has a range from Nova Scotia to BC (British Columbia) and as far south as Georgia. It is not that common in its range though.

The neighbours (including an octogenarian) had never seen anything like this before. After taking the photos and moving the caterpillar away from the house (so it wouldn’t get stepped on – more for our protection than its), we have not seen the sphinx again. Maybe will we see the moth next year as the caterpillar is supposed to overwinter in underground burrows.

Disc Golf Course - Jack Pine Hill

Today's photo is at the start of the Disc Golf Course that is on the Jack Pine Hill (during the winter, this is the downhill ski hill that is right in the middle of town). The North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority is responsible for the Laurentian Escarpment Conservation Area of which the ski hill is well-used recreation facility.

This photo is taken near the top of the hill, while I had previously posted one of the ski-hill from the bottom.

I have not played disc golf but it does look like fun and the views from this course are fantastic! The Rotary Club of North Bay were one of the leading volunteers in creating the disc golf course.

Double Bikes - Lake Nipissing Waterfront

This year at the North Bay waterfront from Thursday till Sunday you can rent one of these bikes from FunRentals.ca.

The business is owned by Daryl & Michele Vaillancourt. Daryl Vaillancourt is North Bay City Councillor as well as a local business person. If you go to their website you can see the current prices for renting for 1hour or the day.

I personally haven't ridden on them but they do look like a lot of fun! When I have been riding along the Kate Pace Way bike path and pass the people (usually families) riding these bikes, they all seem to be smiling and laughing and having a grand time! I just may have to give it try sometime before winter lands!

Duchesnay Falls East Channel (summer)

Saturday's post of Duchesnay Falls showed the west channel flowing with water while the east channel is dry (well almost dry, there is a little trickle as can be seen from the wet rocks). Trust me, the rocks were wet and slippery, almost lost my camera trying to walk up this cascade! This coming winter and spring, I will post seasonal photos for a different perspective.

Duchesnay Falls West Channel (summer)

Duchesnay Falls is located along Highway 17 (near where Main St meets Hwy 17) at the north end of the city. There are walking trails along Duchesnay Creek to view the falls as well as the forests around the college and university campus. The creek empties into Lake Nipissing. There are two channels for the falls as it approaches Hwy 17 and during the summer, usually only the west one has water.

Yellow Fish Road

Sorry about the lack of daily updates but I had been out of contact with the "real world" for the past week. It's very nice and relaxing being away from telephones and other "instant" communications.

Since I had spent sometime in nature, I thought today's photo is appropriate about the effect we can have upon the environment.

At first I didn't know what these yellow fish painted on the various roads in the West Ferris subdivision meant. I later learned that it is an initiative of Trout Unlimited Canada’s educational storm drain marking program. It is way to bring attention to the public that everything that goes down our storm drains (and sewers) ultimately finds it way into our rivers, streams, lakes and oceans and into our fish and food supplies.

They painted the fish on the streets near storm drains. We need to remember that even a simple thing as washing one's car can contribute to water quality problems as the runoff can directly enter our watersheds.

Tim Hortons 05 - Cassells St

I know, if you have seen one Tim Hortons, you have seen them all but I wanted to photograph all the Tim Hortons in North Bay. This one is located on Cassells Street.

Does anybody else think maybe Canadians drink too much coffee?? Nah...even if aCanadian's blood donor card shows blood type not as A, B or O negative, but rather as Regular, DoubleDouble or TripleCream 1 Sugar.

North Bay Fire Station 3 (Marshall Ave)

The men and women of the North Bay Fire Department's Station 3 are testing out the ladder truck's hose at their station on a Sunday afternoon.

August Theme - Breakfast

Well it's that time again. Theme Day. This month's daily photo theme is breakfast. Well for us, this is a typical breakfast (if we aren't in a huge rush). Pancakes or crêpes (today it's crêpes) with maple syrup (none of that table syrup or imitation stuff) and lots of butter!!

We get our maple syrup from a local farm (the Matthews family in Powassan).

On the table there is some cranberry jam (the cranberries are from a bog just outside of North Bay), maple syrup (we go through a couple of litres every other month), maple butter (this stuff is to die for...but a word of warning - it is unbelievably sweet....did I mention that it's sweet!!), Tim Hortons coffee (even if we are in a rush, we never go without a Timmys sometime during the day) and real butter (no margarine).

Bomarc Missile in Veterans Park

Although controversial then and now, the Bomarc missile is nevertheless a part of North Bay's history. There were 28 missiles stationed at the Bomarc Missile Base north of the city. These missiles cared nuclear warheads and were intended to act as deterrents in the Cold War. They were decommissioned in the early 70s.

The Project Flanders group who has refurbished the CF100 plane in Lee Park has requested to repair this display but so far has not received authorization from the US Air Force. There has been recent speculation that US Air Force may be taking the missile back.

Here's a different angle of the same CF100 that has been the subject of the North Bay Photo daily blog for the last couple of days. It was taken at dusk and one can almost imagine how these planes would be scrambled during the 1950s at any time of day or night to meet the nation's needs.

Here's the CF100 "Canuck" plane that was the subject of the plaques from yesterday's photo. The "Canuck" was an all weather high altitude long range interceptor.

This plane was restored by Project Flanders, Robert D. Studholme, Gord Robinson. (To answer any questions, no this is not Ned Flanders but rather a reference to Flanders Fields in Belgium where many Canadian perished during the First World War) .

In this photo you can see the soccer pitch lights that were reflections in yesterday's photo.

CF100 "Canuck" in Lee Park

This series of plaques are on the base of the CF100 "Canuck" honouring our Canadian forces and the men and women who served.

I was just going to post photos of the CF100 itself (it's a plane) but then I saw the reflections that were in the plaques and thought you could see parts of North Bay and so I have included them.

From left to right the reflections are:

1) Holy Name of Jesus Christ Catholic Church (at 895 Memorial Drive) - this is on the west side of the plane

2) the series of lights are from the Veterans Field Soccer Pitch for evening games (this is facing the east side of the plane)

3) the reflection of the south, shows the corner of Judge Street and Lakeshore Drive (where you can play mini-golf and grab an ice-cream - I'll put a photo up sometime later this summer).

Boys and their Toys in Thomson Park

Okay so it's not really boys but rather young men at heart racing their radio controlled cars in Thomson Park. The hill in the background is actually used as a great sliding hill during the winter. The guys were racing their cars around and up the hill. The kids who had just finished their soccer game earlier were standing behind and watching all the great fun!!!

Gateway to the North

This original stone arched once graced the old Ferguson Highway (the former name of Hwy 11) entrance into North Bay. It is now the entrance to the parking lot for Lee Park.

The arch was erected by the North Bay Travellers in 1928 (group was later became the North Bay Club of the Associated Canadian Travellers [ACT]). The arch image became part of the city's logo.

The flags in the photo are (l to r):

1) Franco-Ontarian Flag
2) The National Flag of Canada - The Maple Leaf
3) Union Flag (or known more commonly as the Union Jack)
4) Ontario Provinical Flag

On the reverse side of the arch (or original entrance) it lists the mileage (in miles not km) to various towns and cities north of North Bay.

ONR Apartments on Oak Street

The ONR apartments are located on Oak Street near John Street. The apartment building is for retirees of the Ontario Northland Railroad. It is located next door to the corporate head office and offers fantastic views of Lake Nipissing or the city as well as being near the rails.
